What is Tithes, and Why is it so Important?

Written By:

Apostle Loretta Williams, Presiding Prelate

Oasis Worship Center Interdenominational Ministries Fellowship

It is a tenth of any and all increase, income or property that we receive.   Tithes are what we owe to God for our blessings and daily provisions in our lives.  The Lord gives and provides for us in many ways and it is He who supplies all our needs according to His riches in glory. [Philippians 4:19]  We labor or work to receive wages, salaries and income so that we can have things that we want and desire.  It is God who causes the seed that is planted in fertile ground to bring forth an abundant harvest, so that we may have what is necessary for our survival.  It is God who makes the vineyards fruitful, and causes the fishes to multiply in the oceans and seas so that we can benefit from it.  God created the heaven and the earth, and every living creature for his pleasure.  As an act of obedience, He commands that we return back to Him a tenth of what we receive, and we are allowed to keep ninety per cent of it and do with it as we please.

ABRAM: Presents the tenth of all his property or rather the spoils of his victory to Melchizeddek the High Priest of the Lord. (New Testament Hebrews 7:1-9)  And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.  And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.  (Genesis 14:18-20)

JACOB: After his vision at Luz, declares a vow to devote a tenth of all his property to God when he returns again to his Father’s home in safety.  And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:  And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.  (Genesis 28:20-22)

You can not give what isn’t yours, therefore the Tithe is not an offering, it is an obligation unto the Lord.  You don’t decide how much Tithes you are going to pay, because it is a debt that is owed, and when you incur a debt, you pay the amount that is due, and if you do not pay what is owed when it is due, you are charged an additional amount which is called interest.  The interest is on the amount that you owed, and it is must be paid before you can borrow again.  And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD.  And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.  (Leviticus 27:30-31)

Who do I give my Tithes to?  God commanded that the Tithes be brought to the Levites, which represented the Priesthood of Israel for their service in the tabernacle, temple where He abided.    And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation. (Numbers 18:21)   Moreover he commanded the people that dwelt in Jerusalem to give the portion of the priests and the Levites, that they might be encouraged in the law of the LORD.  And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly.  And concerning the children of Israel and Judah, that dwelt in the cities of Judah, they also brought in the tithe of oxen and sheep, and the tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the LORD their God, and laid them by heaps.  (2 Chronicles 31:4-6)

Today, the Tithes are to be given to the apostles, bishops, pastors and priests who preside over you and are the watchman for your souls, your spiritual leaders and mentors who you, your church or ministry is held spiritually accountable.  Tithes should be given to the leader {apostle, bishop, pastor or priest} who feeds you spiritually in your local assembly, church or organization where you are an active member and have pledged your loyalty and support.  You should not pay Tithes just to anyone, especially to those who are not designated to receive them in accordance to the Word of God.  Just because a person is called to minister, doesn’t mean that are qualified or appointed by God to receive Tithes.

Where do I pay my Tithes? It should be brought or sent to the local church, assembly, temple, tabernacle, ministry or organization where you are a member.  But unto the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come: (Deuteronomy 12:5)   Then there shall be a place which the LORD your God shall choose to cause his name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the LORD: (Deuteronomy 12:11)

What are the benefits of paying Tithes in accordance to the Word of the Lord?

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.  And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.  And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.  (Malachi 3:10-12)

When you are obedient and pay the tenth to those who are designated in accordance to the Word of God to receive it, you reap the blessings from God who will grant you favor, and multiply what you have given.  God values your obedience more than your sacrifices and offerings.

What are the consequences if I don’t Tithe?  You bring a curse upon yourself, your household and even the place where you worship.  Why, because you have robbed God.  Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.  Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. (Malachi 3:89)

In conclusion, it is the duty and obligation of every person that receives increase, profit, wages, salaries, gifts, endowments and inheritance to pay a tenth of it to their  apostle, bishop, pastor or priest where they are affiliated or a member of that assembly, church, ministry, temple, tabernacle or organization.  There is a purpose to every ordinance or law that God mandates, it is for our good and spiritual well-being.  We when fail to be obedient to the Word of the Lord, God’s Laws and Commandments, we bring chaos, destruction, lack and want into our lives, families, churches and ministries.  Disobedience is a sin, and God doesn’t tolerate sin.

The devil has lied and cheated so many people out of their inheritance and blessings from God, because they have held and kept the Tithe for their own personal uses or benefits.  How can we say we love God, when we are not obedient to His Word?  If you love me, keep my commandments. (John 14:15)

Regardless of the status of the economy where you may live, God has and will be faithful to you.  We are not to trust in our own riches {salaries, wages or income} but rather trust in Him, who has made us and given to us our health, strength and lives.  We have so much to be thankful for, yet we allow Satan to tempt us into not giving what is due to God, so that we can continue to receive the blessings He has promised.  Our churches and ministries suffer, and are unable to run and fulfill the vision of the leadership, and commission set forth by Christ to his apostles in the New Testament, because people refuse to pay the Tithe or they do not pay what is owed.

Every person needs to make a vow of commitment after reading and hearing this Word, to be a doer of the Word and not just a hearer only.  When we all are obedient, we will be able to reap a great harvest of souls, the kingdom of God will flourish, and our churches and ministries will expand their territories and reach out to those who are lost, hurting and need salvation and deliverance.  We will have the buildings and facilities necessary to hold all the people who are coming to receive Christ as their Lord and Savior and the materials and resources to teach people how to defeat Satan and live a victorious life.  We will be able to reach out to the needy, clothe and feed the hungry and minister in our communities and cities. Start this week, and continue in the days and months ahead to set aside the tenth as unto the Lord as an act of obedience.

Honor the Lord with your substance: TITHE

Lev 27:30  And all the TITHE of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD.  31  And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof. 32  And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD.

WE BELIEVE IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CHRISTIAN BELIEVER TO PAY (NOT SOW) THEIR TITHES, BECAUSE TITHE IS WHAT IS OWED UNTO GOD.  A TENTH IS REQUIRED OF YOUR INCOME OR INCREASE TO BE SET ASIDE AND GIVEN TO THE PRIEST (Apostle, Bishop, Overseer, Pastor, Elder) IN ACCORDANCE TO THE WORD OF GOD.

Those who choose to submit your Tithes online through Pay Pal to Oasis Worship Center will receive a statement for their contribution from our office monthly or annually , as well as a receipt from Pay Pal to your email.  Payment can be done by Electronic Checking or Savings Account, Debit or Credit Card.  It’s safe and reliable!
