On a cool winter evening
as I was driving in the Windy City, I passed by and saw that a new
church was opening not far from where my daughter and her husband lived on the Northside. I
could see a few people in the church cleaning and I promised that I would stop by and introduce myself. Well, I did just that! The next Sunday I stepped in to enjoy
the service and to my amazement the Pastor insisted that I bring the Message for that day.
Like my sons in Nigeria, he was
adamant that “mum” speak to the people, he believed that God had sent me and he wasn’t going to let me leave
without ministering. That was the beginning of a wonderful friendship with my
new sons and daughters at Christ Gospel Mission International and the pastor and some of the congregations were from Nigeria! It brought
such joy to my heart to be with them on those few Sunday’s when I had the opportunity to go and visit, and each time
they welcomed me with open hearts. They reminded me so much of my visit to Africa, the intensified prayers. . . believe me if you
don’t know how to pray, all you need to do is attend a true African Church, for prayer is the foundation of their ministry,
the ministers tell the people what and how to pray to God and they do it together out loud so the devil can hear them bombard
heaven with their petitions!
I learned to move and bend
my knees the way my African sisters and mothers do when they dance before the Lord. Although
the beat may be different, I easily adapted after going home and working out with some praise music just so I could keep up
with them!
Pastor Sunday is an awesome
teacher, I attended Sunday School and was so blessed to hear men teaching on moral ethics, family and marital relationships
in accordance to the Word of God and African traditional values. Sister Babawande
the Sunday School Teacher prepares the lesson and opens up discussion and it gets so good that many times the time gets extended
into the scheduled Morning Worship Service a good teacher knows how to get people to participate in Sunday School and not
just do all the talking themselves.
I expect the church will
grow and expand quickly, and know that when I return to Chicago for a visit, I anticipate going “home”
to be with my spiritual children who have accepted me as one of their own.
